Tubod, Lanao del Norte (11 September) — Filipino children who are sent to school do not only require learning sufficient knowledge to get by.
Studies have shown that without essential health care, absenteeism and disinterest will arise, thus, affecting school performance and lessen the chances of acquiring the knowledge parents yearn for their child to have.
As Secretary of Education Jesli A. Lapus said, “The Department of Education (DepEd) has long recognized that good health is essential in reaching educational goals. We need to take urgent action to, and tackle these unacceptably high incidences of diseases with simple and appropriate measures.”
In this light, the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte represented by Governor Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo, in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare Development (DSWD) and DepEd, will implement the integrated Fit for School Program in all elementary schools in the province.
An orientation cum launching of this program will be held at Barangay Napo, Linamon on September 15.
As a starter, children in the Day Care Center of the barangay will be taught how to wash their hands properly to avoid illness and prevent the spread of germs to others.
Proper toothbrushing will similarly be taught to reduce tooth decay.
Deworming will also be conducted with inexpensive, highly effective single-dose drugs.
Further, children, teachers, school health personnel, schools division superintendents, school principals and parents will be reminded of their respective roles and responsibilities in maintaining a health conscious environment where safe water can be accessed and sanitation is a priority.
The launching and orientation is organized by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO). (PIO Lanao del Norte)
