Lanao Sur local bets sign covenant for clean, orderly polls

The electoral candidates swear to strictly abide the rules and regulations promulgated by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and vowed to abstain from doing anything that can deter and impede the conduct of honest, orderly and peaceful elections (HOPE) in the province.
They also affirmed to support and upheld the advocacy for a clean and orderly electoral process for the forthcoming national and local elections.
Western Mindanao Command Chief Lt.Gen. Benjamin Dolorfino of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) meanwhile urged all the candidates to pursue their candidacy honestly and civilly.
He advised them to capitalize on their qualifications and strengths and avoid exploiting the shortcomings of other candidates so that undue animosity can be prevented.
The covenant of peace signing was jointly initiated by the 103rd brigade of the AFP, the provincial COMELEC and the provincial police office. (Apipa P. BagumbaranPIA-Marawi City)

Iligan NDPR Week culminates at camping site

Iligan City (11 August) — The Persons with Disability (PWDs) had taken themselves out for an over-night stay at a camping site, during the city’s culmination activity of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week (NDPR).
Eva dela Cruz, supervising social welfare officer and in-charge of the PWDs of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWD) in Iligan City, said that the activity was an event where PWDs are being recognized and given importance to enjoy the same rights and opportunities with other human beings.
Around sixty (60) PWDs joined the camping at the Centennial Park, Dalipuga, this city and participated in parlor games and showing of talents.
Meanwhile, the city government’s effort towards disability prevention, rehabilitation and equalization of opportunities has embodied in with the implementation of Republic Act No. 9442, otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons and for Other Purposes.
RA 9442 states that every person with disability shall enjoy a special discount of five percent (5%) of the regular retail price of basic necessities and prime commodities listed of this Order.
The total amount of purchase shall not exceed the amount of PhP1,300.00 per calendar week without carry over of the unused amount.
To avail of the discount, the PWD must present his / her identification card issued by the National Council on Disability Affairs (NsCDA) or by the authorized office of Local Government Units (LGUs) where she / he resides.
Other activity incurred for the NDPR week-long celebration was the registration of new PWDs living in Iligan. They were encouraged to submit themselves for issuance of identification card to avail other privileges and incentives intended for them, dela Cruz explained.
“With the implementation of RA 9442, we likewise encourage malls and other grocery stores to have an Express Lane for the persons with disability,” dela Cruz added.
Meanwhile, the local government, this city, has employed 25 PWDs at the city hall. Private companies, likewise, have accepted 10 PWDs as part of their workforce. (PIA Lanao del Norte)

DOT notes 62.04% hotel occupancy rate in Northern Mindanao

Cagayan de Oro City (11 May) — An average 62.04% occupancy rate in hotels and lodging houses have been noted in Northern Mindanao, last year, posting a 9.11% improvement over that of 2007.
The highest occupancy rate of 88.02% was noted in Cagayan de Oro and Gingoog Cities, Misamis Oriental followed by Ozamiz, Tangub & Oroquieta Cities in Misamis Occidental, 70%, Iligan City and Tubod, Lanao del Norte, 58.02%, Camiguin, 50% and Malaybalay and Valencia Cities, Bukidnon, 34.16%.
As gateway of the region, Cagayan de Oro hosted most of the conventions and seminars, hence their high hotel occupancy rate, Regional Director Catalino E. Chan III of the Department of Tourism (DOT), Region 10, said.
“With this data, the private sector suppliers of hotels, restaurants, transport, etc. are now challenged to pool their resources together and make innovations with attractive packages to draw the spending capabilities of the market,” Chan also said.
Meanwhile, he said the continued support of the local government units, private sector and the regional line agencies will greatly help in further promoting the tourist destinations of the region.
Last year, a total of 1,041,382 tourists visited the region of which 994,897 were Filipino domestic tourists, 3,732 were Balikbayans while the rest were foreigners.
Chan said the most number of 6,590 foreign tourists came from USA, followed by the Koreans, 4,523, Japan, 4,101, China, 4,008, Germany, 2,033, Australia, 1,876, United Kingdom, 1,237, Hongkong, 1,158, Taiwan, 1,086, and Netherlands, 1,025. (PIA 10)
