NPA members surrender to 403rd Brigade in Bukidnon
Malaybalay City, Bukidnon (2 September) — Thirty two (32) New People’s Army (NPA) peacefully surrendered to Col. Nicanor Dolojan, army’s 403rd Brigade Commander, at Umayam, Canangaan, Cabanglasan, Bukidnon on August 18, 2009.
Lieutenant Col. Jose Leonard Gille, 403rd Brigade Civil Military Operations Officer said the local terrorist group is led by 35 year-old Roger Guinumhay aka King.
According to the records of the 403rd Brigade, the surrenderees brought with them one hundred seventy three (173) immediate family members—eighty four (84) adults and eighty nine (89) children.
The former rebels, who are now housed under the custody of the Philippine Army, also surrendered thirty (30) assorted low and high-powered firearms.
“During the initial custodial debriefing, King admitted of their decision to lay down their arms and go back into the mainstream of society because of the hardships they experience in the mountains and disappointments with the cause,” Gille said.
Besides, all of the rebels believed that the government would be true to its promise of bringing them to normal life, he added.
Col. Nicanor Dolojan said the surrender was attributed through the massive information campaign and tactical operations conducted by the operating elements of 403rd Infantry Brigade in the area with the help of local government units, media, non-government organizations, and all agencies that support programs for peace and development.
“The former rebels—better known as ‘Kauban sa Reporma (KRs)’ — would receive financial assistance from the government through the “Balik-baril and Social Integration Program, after assessment and evaluation of their records,” Dolojan further said. (Ruby Leonora R. Balistoy, PIA-Bukidnon)
