RDCC 10 outlines priority activities for 2009

Camiguin Province (31 March) — The island-province of Camiguin recently hosted the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council and Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC-PDCC) first quarter joint meeting at the Camiguin Convention Center in Mambajao town.

The Regional Disaster Coordinating Council 10 (RDCC) gathers up for this quarter’s meet to evaluate their efforts and to outline this year’s priority programs and projects.

They consider the need to identify primary and alternative evacuation centers or potential relocation sites in respective cities and provinces as well as organize and reorganize Local Disaster control groups and action teams.

And to harness efforts in mitigating disaster it was unanimously agreed by the group to conduct an Inventory of preventive and mitigating structures constructed and early warning devices such as sirens, warning signs or markers set up by the local government units or National government offices.

Office of the Civil Defense Regional Director Camelito Lupo also announced in the meeting the reactivation of Provincial/Municipal/ City Selection Committee and evaluation for Best DCC’s and best private volunteer organizations for the 2009 Gawad Kalasag Search and the deputization of Barangay Captains.

RDCC Chair and Police Regional Office 10 Director Danilo T. Empedrad in the meantime reminded the members on the importance of a coordinated effort in reducing disaster risk.

Good performing Local Disaster Coordinating Councils (LDCC’s) were asked to share their best practices as a means of identifying notable initiatives and replicating such to other cities and provinces in the region.

Meanwhile, Camiguin Governor Jurdin Jesus M. Romualdo cited during the meeting notable efforts the island province has initiated to institutionalized disaster preparedness.

Camiguin District Representative Pedro P. Romualdo likewise recounted his firsthand disaster experiences from volcanic eruption, fire to flashfloods.

He noted that it is equally important to train neighboring barangays of danger zone areas as they are the potential group that can be mobilized to send immediate assistance in times of emergencies. (PIA-Camiguin)
