Cagayan de Oro City (18 March) — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the fast-tracking of infrastructure projects in the Mindanao Agri-Business Super Region even as 14 of such projects amounting to P 15.761 billion have been completed as of 2008.
The President sounded the order during the 27th Full Cabinet Meeting on March 17, at the Phivedec Industrial Estate in Tagoloan town, Misamis Oriental province.
Arriving some 15 minutes ahead of the 1:00 p.m. scheduled meeting, President Arroyo, dressed in her favorite powder blue pant suit ensemble, also extended her engagement with the cabinet secretaries for an hour and 15 minutes more as she left at 3:45 p.m., when she was supposed to leave at 2:30 p.m. as previously arranged.
Before the meeting, she took time to visit the a marine park in Barangay Waterfall, Balingasag, Misamis Oriental to oversee the stocking of bangus fingerlings in the fish cages, a very sound investment for fisherfolks in the area and talked to rice farmers in Barangay Blanco of the said town.
What the President did only showed her concern for the development of the Mindanao super region stressing its investments in agri-business and other potentials, such as, tourism and industrial development.
Agribusiness Mindanao is one of the country’s five super regions which the President has envisioned to enhance the competitive advantage of its natural resources, namely, the North Luzon Agribusiness Quadrangle, the Luzon Urban Beltway and Central Philippines and the Cyber Corridor that encompasses all these regions.
As the President earlier said when harnessed together, these major economic regions of the nation are larger than the sum of its parts.
Meanwhile, Sec. Jesus Dureza, Chief Legal Counsel and Mindanao Super Region Development Champion, who rendered a report on the achievements in Mindanao, said 27 more projects are expected to be completed, this year.
He said these on-going projects undertaken by the various agencies of the government in different parts of the island are all aimed to boost economic activities that would enhance economic growth, improve access to social services, reduce transport cost and generate employment and business opportunities in the region.
