OWWA to release P2.3M in loans to displaced OFWs in Northern Mindanao

Cagayan de Oro City (24 March) — At least P2.3 million worth of loans will be released to 46 displaced Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in Northern Mindanao.
Checks for these loans will be released under the Filipino Expatriate Livelihood Support Fund (FELSF) of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) during the Consultative Forum with OFWs scheduled on March 26 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant, this city.
Petronila M. Bergado, Regional Director of OWWA in Region 10, said the loans are intended for OFWs who have returned to the country because the companies they were working with had either closed-shop or had undergone retrenchment and are, therefore, economically displaced to the global financial crisis.
“President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who was in the city last February 26, has already released 33 checks amounting P2.7 million of these loans which she personally handed to the returning OFW beneficiaries”, Bergado said.
Of this amount, P1.5 million was availed of, at P50,000 each, by 30 OFWs coming from Region 10, Region 11 in Davao and Region 13 in the Caraga.
About P313,500 each was released to the local government units (LGU) of Linamon and Kolambugan towns, under the Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD).
Likewise, P573,000 was released to the LGU of Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND) under the Integrated Services for Livelihood Assistance for Marginalized Fisherfolks (ISLA).
“These LGUS are all from Lanao del Norte,” Bergado added. (PIA-10)
