Lanao Norte, civil society groups gather for “Panagtagbo”

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (23 March) — The province of Lanao del Norte, in celebration of the Month of Peace held a “Panagtagbo” or meeting on March 20 at the Provincial Capitol in Tubod town, with the various Civil Society Organizations advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in northern Mindanao.

The “Panagtagbo” was a joint activity of the Provincial Government headed by Governor Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo, United Religions Initiative represented by Executive Director Charles Gibbs, Peacemakers Circle Foundation, Manila represented by Marites G. Africa, government institutions in Lanao del Norte, the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the civil society.

The United Religions Initiative (URI) promotes peace and solidarity among the Muslim and Christian communities involved in the armed conflict.

The URI is an interfaith institution functioning as catalyst in the peace building efforts of both the government and the civil society, thus strengthening peace initiatives, daily interfaith cooperation, and creates a culture of peace, justice and healing in the communities affected by past atrocities.

In an interview with Provincial Information Office of the province, URI Executive Director Gibbs explained that its mission is to bring the message of peace and solidarity to the people of Lanao del Norte with the hope of building unity amidst cultural and religious diversity.

For his part, Governor Dimaporo is optimistic that the peace building initiatives of the government supported by the different stakeholders in the goal for lasting peace in Mindanao will bring about the peace and development long-awaited by the Mindanaoans. (ARMS/PIO-LDN)
