Iligan City (11 March) — A recent firefight ensued between government troops and the Lawless Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Group (LMG) while the military were conducting their routine law enforcement operations against them.
Major Erwin A. Alea, Civil Military Operations (CMO) Chief, G7, of the First Infantry Division (1ID), Philippine Army (PA) told reporters in a press conference held today, March 10 at Philippine Information Agency (PIA) – Lanao del Norte Information Center that operating troops of 43rd Infantry Battalion, 8th Infantry Division under Lt Col Juvymax Uy encountered an undetermined number of fully armed LMG at around 9:45 AM on March 7, 2009 at Sitio Sakop, Barangay Bacayawan, in the town of Madalum in Lanao del Sur.
The government troops suffered no casualties while one LMG member was killed during the encounter, Alea said.
He also disclosed that the pursuing troops recovered at the scene of encounter one Cal 5.56 M16 rifle, one cellphone, one ICOM HH radio and four long magazines for M16 with ammunitions.
Major Alea revealed that said group was believed to be led by Abu Subair who was responsible for the series of encounters with government troops at the town of Munai, Lanao del Norte the previous day.
One government trooper was slightly wounded during the latest encounter in Munai however it also resulted to the discovery of an old LMG camp at the area, Major Alea stressed. (PIA Marawi)
