DTI Iligan alerts consumers to help monitor LPG price and cylinders quality

Iligan City (25 February) — In spite of government efforts to thwart unscrupulous businesspeople, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Iligan City reminds consumers to be vigilant and do their own inspection of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders before accepting them into their homes.

Provincial Director Ruel B. Paclipan of DTI Iligan, said they work with the Department of Energy (DOE) in monitoring the supply and price of LPG.

The DOE reported that an 11-kilogram LPG tank costs approximately P500-P595 in Metro Manila as of 11 February 2009.

“We are directed at the provincial level to include the 11-kg. LPG cylinders in our monitoring, not just to check on prices but to inspect whether or not the cylinders underwent the mandatory testing and bear the Philippine Standard (PS) license or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC)”, expressed Paclipan.

He further explained, the DTI-Bureau of Product Standards (BPS) led the development of the Philippine National Standard (PNS) on LPG an cylinder, that is to assure the buying public of safe and quality LPG cylinders in the market.

Also, the DTI-BPS supplements the monitoring and enforcement activities of the DTI’s regional and provincial offices on establishments to inspect if they only sell cylinders that conform to the requirements of the standard.

Likewise, DTI-BPS regulates the said product through its Product Certification Scheme, wherein all LPG cylinder manufacturers, importers, and distributors are required to have their products tested at the BPS Testing Center or at any BPS-accredited or recognized laboratory prior to sale of distribution, Paclipan added.

DTI has warned traders not to take advantage of the current situation, thus, the government will file cases against retailers that are caught overpricing and hoarding. (PIA Lanao del Norte)
