Iligan City (25 February) — Under the emergency fund of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 10, One Million pesos is being allocated as an immediate response to farmers affected by the flashfloods in January this year within the two watersheds of Mandulog andIligan Rivers, this city.
Mamacaya M. Lucman, community environment and natural resources officer (CENRO), DENR-Iligan City Office, said that huge damage to agricultural crops has greatly affected the farmers especially those residing and cultivating within these two watersheds where the mainstreams were discharging bulk of water from heavy and continuous precipitation for several days during the first two weeks of the year.
Lucman said the amount intended to the 30-hectare Agro-forestry development project would benefit the two Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) sites located within the Mandulog River Watershed.
The two people’s organization namely, the Tawagon Farmers Multi-purpose Cooperative (TAFAMCO) composed of 11 farmers with 27 households, and Caribao Mainit Integrated Farmers Association (CMIFA) comprising 12 farmers with 169 households.
Meanwhile, the DENR Central Office has approved an amount of PhP840,000.00 under the DENR-CARP (Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program) Fund for Pantar CBFM Debvelopment Project to be implemented in the upstream portion ofIligan River Watershed specifically located at Sitio Bago-a Ingud, Barangay Sundiga Punod, town of Pantar, Lanao del Norte, revealed Lucman.
Under the CARP-Funded Project, the Bago-a Ingud Pantar Integrated Multi-Purpose Cooperative has 51 members with 42 households, said Lucman.
He said further, the actual area development or project implementation would commence within the week right after the signing of contract, project launching, and the subsequent release of 15 percent mobilization fund.
These three concerned CBFM-POs had already been mobilizing especially in canvassing quality farm inputs like certified seeds, grafted fruit tree seedlings, fertilizers, and others. The area development for the emergency funded project should be fully accomplished by the end of March 2009, Lucman explained.
The above mentioned farmers’ organizations are expected to sustain and manage these projects for possible replications using the income to be generated from these projects, Lucman disclosed. (PIA Lanao del Norte
