All systems go for 2009 Gov. Dimaporo’s nat’l motocross championships

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (18 November) — With a world-class motocross dirt track finally completed, hundreds of national and local riders are set to see action on December 12 to 13, 2009 in the biggest motocross competition in northern Mindanao.

The province of Lanao del Norte is no stranger to the hosting of national motocross championships. In fact, it can even boasts of being the preferred venue for bemedalled riders in this extreme motorsport specially with the inclusion of motocross as one of the regular highlights in its “Araw ng Lanao del Norte” celebrations.

One of the main reasons why national riders flock to this province is the excellent location of its racing track. The site of the motocross track is inside the sprawling Mindanao Civic Center (MCC) complex situated right in the heart of the capitol town of Tubod.

Spectators of this sport will also be glad to know that watching the death-defying jumps of these adrenaline junkies will be like watching their favorite game of basketball. This is because the track designers have carved out the expansive dirt track right in front of the MCC grandstand. The audience will then be able to watch every twist, turn and crash of the racers from the comfortable vantage point of the spacious grandstand.

It is no wonder then that with the increasing number of foreign and local tourists visiting Lanao del Norte to watch the varied spectator sports continuously being showcased here, the province is fast becoming the sporting destination in northern Mindanao.

“The province has been annually hosting the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) games and we are adding new and exciting sports every year. This time we’ve chosen motocross because people are very thrilled to see their jumps and stunts. It is the goal of the provincial government to make Lanao del Norte not only the sporting destination in northern Mindanao but the motocross capital of the country as well”, explained Provincial Information Officer Lyndon Calica. Pres. Arroyo extends gun amnesty to November 30

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (13 November) — Due to public demand, the Final General Firearms Amnesty (FGFA) implemented by the Philippine National Police (PNP) last month has been extended for another 30 days, from Nov. 1-30, 2009.

Such extension is specified in Executive Order 817-A signed by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, recently, upon recommendation of the National Firearms Control Program Executive Committee (NFCP Execom).

P/Chief Supt. Danilo Empedrad, Regional Director of PNP, region 10, said the NFCP Execom stressed the need to give additional time for holders of loose firearms to register their firearms under the amnesty program, hence, the recommendation to extend it for another month.

Implemented pursuant to EO 187 from Oct. 1-30, 2009, the FGFA allows all individuals and juridical entities, such as, the security guard agencies and local government units (LGU) to renew their expired firearm licenses and/or register their unregistered firearms with the PNP.

The drive for the registration of loose firearms is providing substantial results, especially among the prospective registrants in remote areas and provinces who have expressed the need for more time to register their firearms.

Pursuant to EO 187-A, the extension will synchronize with the expected passage into law of House Bill 6776 or the proposed amendment of the Firearms Law which seek to impose stiffer penalties against persons and entities possessing illegal firearms and ammunition.

Meanwhile, Empedrad said some 8,083 firearms were accounted for in the region as a result of implementing EO 817.

About 7,681 of these firearms fell under the “Bilang Boga” category that included the newly registered, renewed and juridical firearms, while 402 firearms fell under the “Kontra Boga” category that were confiscated from threat groups and criminal elements. (PIA 10)

Only active GSIS old-age pensioners qualify for cash gift, pension increase

Cagayan de Oro City (12 November) — Old-age pensioners of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) whose pension benefits have been suspended are reminded to renew their active status each year during their birth month. This is in order for them to continue receiving their monthly pension and to qualify them for other possible benefits, which include the annual Christmas cash gift and the pension increase.

If a pensioner is under a suspended status at the time that the GSIS declares a cash gift and pension increase, the pensioner will not be eligible to receive such benefits. This is based on an existing GSIS policy, which has been around for 35 years, and which provides that only old-age pensioners who are in active status are entitled to cash gifts and pension increases.

“Pension adjustments or cash gifts should not be given to pensioners under suspended status because of their failure to comply with the condition imposed by the GSIS for their continuous receipt of the monthly pensions, that is, the annual renewal of active status,” the GSIS said.

“They shall be entitled thereto only after they have complied and any pension increase shall be given starting only from the time another pension adjustment or cash gift is granted provided the pensioners are, in accordance with policy, still in active status,” the GSIS added.

The release of cash gifts as well as any pension increase is subject to approval of the GSIS Board of Trustees.

A pensioner can renew his/her active status through the GSIS Wireless Automated Processing System (G-W@PS) kiosk with the use of the eCard Plus. G-W@PS kiosks are installed in all GSIS servicing office and selected government agencies.

Pensioners can also renew their active status by calling the GSIS Teleservice domestic toll free number (1-800-10-847-4747 for Smart and PLDT, and 1-800-8-847-4747 for Globe numbers) if the pensioner has already enrolled in the GSIS Voice Activated Processing System or GVAPS.

Meanwhile, for pensioners who are bedridden or unable to leave their homes, they can coordinate with the GSIS for a home visit arrangement.

Also, pensioners abroad can renew their active status using the GVAPS by calling the numbers 632-976-0860 or 632-884-7400. (GSIS
