Buruun folks bag Northern Mindanao’s model Filipino family award
Cagayan de Oro City (25 September) — A family from Buruun, Iligan City was recognized yesterday, September 24, as the Regional Model Filipino Family for Northern Mindanao level.
Mr. Glenn and D’Vincet Quihoy and sons GJ’ Joash, Clint John, Chris Angelico and Jacks Zechariah topped the rates in the search for “Huwarang Pamilyang Pilipino” which was facilitated and judged by the Regional Inter-Agency Committee on the Filipino Family.
The Quihoy family stood out in the criteria in which the husband and wife demonstrate love and respect for each other, the parents demonstrate love and respect for their children and the children demonstrate love and respect for one another.
The family also scored high in their involvement in community affairs.
“We are not a perfect family but still we thank everybody for their recognition towards us,” D’Vincet Quihoy, said.
“What probably made us become the model family is our devotion towards each other and towards God.”
Glenn, Barangay Captain of Buruun and D’Vincet, the dean of College of Arts and Sciences in Iligan City Medical Center, shared that their family went through a lot just like other families but said that they always believed that the end of it all was God.
“My husband and I always make sure that we set ourselves as an example to our children. So we always pray and put God in the center of our marriage and family.”
As the Huwarang Pamilyang Pilipino, the Quihoy family will be reaching out to the communities in Northern Mindanao by endorsing barangay action plans on family interventions and activities and serve as advocates on family values.
The second and first runners up were Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Narabe, Jr. of Gingoog City and Mr. and Mrs. Zoilo Erigbuagas of Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte.
The Regional Inter-Agency Committee on the Filipino Family was represented from the Departments of Social Welfare and Development, Agriculture, Interior and Local Governance, Environment and Natural Resources, and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office of Misamis Oriental.
The search was also conducted by the Department of Social welfare and Development (DSWD), region 10, in celebration to the National Filipino Family Week of which the theme is “Si Nanay: Matatag sa Lahat ng Bagay.” (DSWD-10)

Parental absence pushes children to addictions, says Iligan City dad
Cagayan de Oro City (25 September) — Pastor Bayani Areola, city Councilor of Iligan City and Pastor of the Jesus is Lord Ministries expressed that parental absence is one of the implications over which family values have deteriorated over the years.
“Our children have resorted to Internet chatting and gaming and have lost interest in going to school because of parental absence and lack of parental guidance,” Pastor Areola said.
Areola also expressed that the children are now addicted to these new technologies, borne by globalization, because they lack attention and guidance that should have been provided by their parents.
“The Internet and other Information Communication Technology (ICT) gadgets are now in our children’s grasps, making them exposed and vulnerable to pornography, violence, and child trafficking,” Pastor Areola said.
“Our parents need to be aware that their absence can lead their children to varieties of addiction that could probably lead them to crimes and even deaths.”
Pastor Areola was one of the speakers during the Regional Parent Education Congress (RPEC) conducted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-X held recently in Cagayan de Oro City.
The assembly was participated by solo parents, couples, and Northern Mindanao local government units who, in the later part of the assembly, crafted action plans on family interventions and activities.
Ms. Ada Yanez-Bagares, a solo parent from the municipality of Lugait, shared that the Regional Parent Education Congress (RPEC) has really made a great impact to her.
“Last night, because I was challenged by what I have learned at the RPEC, I sent a text message to my daughter’s father and told him that we loved him. I was really surprised and overjoyed when he responded that he also loves us too. I guess my family still has a chance to be reunited again. I really am thankful to DSWD.”
The RPEC was conducted by DSWD in celebration to the National Family Week with this year’s theme as “Si Nanay: matatag sa lahat ng bagay.” (DSWD-10)
