DENR-10 allocates P1-M for Iligan’s Agro-forestry dev’t project

by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (25 February) — Under the emergency fund of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 10, One Million pesos is being allocated as an immediate response to farmers affected by the flashfloods in January this year within the two watersheds of Mandulog andIligan Rivers, this city.

Mamacaya M. Lucman, community environment and natural resources officer (CENRO), DENR-Iligan City Office, said that huge damage to agricultural crops has greatly affected the farmers especially those residing and cultivating within these two watersheds where the mainstreams were discharging bulk of water from heavy and continuous precipitation for several days during the first two weeks of the year.

Lucman said the amount intended to the 30-hectare Agro-forestry development project would benefit the two Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) sites located within the Mandulog River Watershed.

The two people’s organization namely, the Tawagon Farmers Multi-purpose Cooperative (TAFAMCO) composed of 11 farmers with 27 households, and Caribao Mainit Integrated Farmers Association (CMIFA) comprising 12 farmers with 169 households.

Meanwhile, the DENR Central Office has approved an amount of PhP840,000.00 under the DENR-CARP (Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program) Fund for Pantar CBFM Debvelopment Project to be implemented in the upstream portion ofIligan River Watershed specifically located at Sitio Bago-a Ingud, Barangay Sundiga Punod, town of Pantar, Lanao del Norte, revealed Lucman.

Under the CARP-Funded Project, the Bago-a Ingud Pantar Integrated Multi-Purpose Cooperative has 51 members with 42 households, said Lucman.

He said further, the actual area development or project implementation would commence within the week right after the signing of contract, project launching, and the subsequent release of 15 percent mobilization fund.

These three concerned CBFM-POs had already been mobilizing especially in canvassing quality farm inputs like certified seeds, grafted fruit tree seedlings, fertilizers, and others. The area development for the emergency funded project should be fully accomplished by the end of March 2009, Lucman explained.

The above mentioned farmers’ organizations are expected to sustain and manage these projects for possible replications using the income to be generated from these projects, Lucman disclosed. (PIA Lanao del Norte

DTI Iligan alerts consumers to help monitor LPG price and cylinders quality

by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (25 February) — In spite of government efforts to thwart unscrupulous businesspeople, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Iligan City reminds consumers to be vigilant and do their own inspection of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders before accepting them into their homes.

Provincial Director Ruel B. Paclipan of DTI Iligan, said they work with the Department of Energy (DOE) in monitoring the supply and price of LPG.

The DOE reported that an 11-kilogram LPG tank costs approximately P500-P595 in Metro Manila as of 11 February 2009.

“We are directed at the provincial level to include the 11-kg. LPG cylinders in our monitoring, not just to check on prices but to inspect whether or not the cylinders underwent the mandatory testing and bear the Philippine Standard (PS) license or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC)”, expressed Paclipan.

He further explained, the DTI-Bureau of Product Standards (BPS) led the development of the Philippine National Standard (PNS) on LPG an cylinder, that is to assure the buying public of safe and quality LPG cylinders in the market.

Also, the DTI-BPS supplements the monitoring and enforcement activities of the DTI’s regional and provincial offices on establishments to inspect if they only sell cylinders that conform to the requirements of the standard.

Likewise, DTI-BPS regulates the said product through its Product Certification Scheme, wherein all LPG cylinder manufacturers, importers, and distributors are required to have their products tested at the BPS Testing Center or at any BPS-accredited or recognized laboratory prior to sale of distribution, Paclipan added.

DTI has warned traders not to take advantage of the current situation, thus, the government will file cases against retailers that are caught overpricing and hoarding. (PIA Lanao del Norte)
